MEET JUDGE GERARDO TRISTAN, JR.
A JUDGE WITH EXPERIENCE AND AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMMUNITY
Judge Gerardo Tristan, Jr. was born in Chicago. He grew up in the Brighton Park neighborhood and graduated from St. Joseph and St. Anne’s Grammar School and Quigley Preparatory Seminary South High School.
Judge Tristan, Jr. attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double concentration in Economics and International Relations. Judge Tristan, Jr. returned to Chicago and worked at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Household Finance, and Motorola before returning to law school. While in those careers he gained a perspective of how the law affects people lives and it is a perspective that he brings to the bench with him.
He graduated from DePaul College of Law and went to work for the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). At CPS, he represented CPS in disciplinary hearings. After CPS, Judge Tristan, Jr. went to work with his brother at Tristan & Cervantes. There he represented a wide client base, he was exposed to various areas of civil law, dealing with issues of labor law, real estate law, and corporate law.
In 2003, he was sworn in as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Cook County. He began serving the people of Cook County in the Civil Division. He worked in Child Support Enforcement enforcing child support orders issued by the Court. From there, he transitioned to the Juvenile Justice Bureau. In his role he helped the most vulnerable citizens of Cook County, those who suffered horrific acts of abuse at the hands of those who were supposed to care for them. Judge Tristan, Jr. was then transferred to the Markham Courthouse where he worked in Juvenile Delinquency, trying to bring justice to victims of juvenile offenders through compassionate prosecution and restorative justice programs.
In January of 2019, Judge Tristan, Jr. was appointed the Cook County Circuit Court. He currently serves in the First Municipal District – Traffic Section where he hears cases dealing with traffic violations and misdemeanor DUI charges. Judge Tristan, Jr. brings compassion, a keen understanding of victims of crime and extensive jury trial experience. Judge Tristan, Jr. is married to a public school teacher and has two sons.
